Switzerland

An expensive country to visit at any time of the year, but you can save your Swiss Francs for your holiday spends when you book your clicktransers.com taxi before you leave home. Visit Switzerland in the spring (April and May) or autumn (September and October). Fewer visitors at these times of the year. July and August can be rainy, but not always, and prices will be more expensive. The ski season is from mid December until April. Christmas and New Year are extremely busy. Slopes are crowded and you could spend valuable skiing time just waiting in the queue for the lifts or cable cars.

You can use Euros in Switzerland, but you'll probably get your change in Swiss Francs. Change your currency at the money-exchange bureaux, where you are more likely to get a better rate. Train fares are on the expensive side, buses can be a little bit cheaper. Ask at a local tourist office, or your hotel, about buying a travel pass.

The main attraction in Bern, the capital, was until recently the Bear Pit (Barengraben). The bears have now been moved to a riverside location (alongside the River Aare). For great views over Bern, take the train (exciting trip for children) to Gurten. Best times to visit are sunrise and sunset.

Zurich has a brilliant zoo. The entrance fee is not too expensive, but take a packed lunch 'cos eating out in the restaurant is! The old part of Zurich has some lovely shops, cobbled streets, nice bars and cafes. About 50kms away are the Rhine Falls. This is a 'must see' - and 'hear' - experience. And a great photo opportunity.

The Reichenbach Falls, where 'Sherlock Holmes' died, is near Meiringen, in the Berner Oberland. Take the funicular railway to the base of the falls, and then watch from the viewing platform . Nearby is Interlaken, (Lake Brienz on one side and Lake Thun on the other) with stunning views of the Jungfrau. Hop on a bus to Grindelwald to see the Eiger, Monch and Wetterhorn close up. Go to Luzern, walk over the wooden bridge, built in the 14th century, stopping to admire the old paintings and the flower boxes. One of Luzern's most famous landmarks is the Lion Monument on Denkmalstrasse, dedicated to the Swiss soldiers who died in 1792 during the French Revolution.

The Lakes of Maggiori and Lugano are the places to relax. Wander round the towns of Locarno and Ascona, or Lugano just to get a feel for the Italian part of Switzerland.

To the west of the country is Geneva. Large clean city, gorgeous lake, world's tallest fountain and good eateries. And it's on the way to the Alps! Even more reason to stop off and give the city a proper look.
