Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria. Here you can walk around the historic area of the city and wonder at the architecture, or take the yellow open top tourist bus. Photograph the old wooden houses with their Canarian balconies,dripping with flowers, see the statue of Christopher Columbus ( Cristobal Colon). Go to the top of the Catedral de Santa Ana and marvel at the panoramic view of the city. Museums of note are: the Museo de Colon, a architectural delight, complete with two patios overlooked by Canarian balconies; the Museo Canario, depicting the history of Gran Canaria up to the conquest in 1478; and the Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnologia, the Gran Canaria equivalent of London’s Science Museum.
By night, Las Palmas is a buzzing city, but keep to the main well lit streets.
At the southern tip of Gran Canaria, is Playa del Ingles, and the Dunes of Maspalomas. Take a morning walk from El Faro (the lighthouse) at Playa de Maspalomas along the sandy beach, arriving a couple of hours later in Playa del Ingles in time to enjoy lunch, or a drink, in one of the seafront restaurants whilst people watching . Local buses run frequently between Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles. Also there are several theme parks in the vicinity. Look at the exotic flora, tropical birds, butterflies and parrot shows; water parks with pools and slides; or cheer on your band of cowboys or indians.
Many hotels in Playa de Ingles have evening entertainment. As long as you buy a drink, you won’t be charged an entrance fee. Details of shows are available in the hotel s’ receptions, and acts change daily. You may also like to try The Yumbo Centrum, a large shopping centre by day, with restaurants, banks and supermarkets, and an enormous complex of discos by night.
Puerto de Mogan lies on the south west coast of Gran Canaria and is a quaint little fishing village, brilliant fish restaurants and an abundance of souvenir shops. Enjoy a boat trip out to sea and go dolphin and whale spotting. Travel to the village by local transport, which is inexpensive and frequent.
